Luis Gordillo established himself as a pioneer of artistic experimentation with his unique use of figuration and color. He has a deep interest in psychoanalysis and is constantly looking for new ways of expression, utilizing photography and other image reproduction methods alongside traditional painterly techniques. Over his fifty-year career Luis Gordillo has risen to become one of Spain’s most prolific painters and one of the leading figures of abstract art in the country.

He has participated in exhibitions in Spain and internationally, including MACBA, Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao; Biblioteca Nacional, Círculo de Bellas Artes; Pabellón Mudéjar, Sevilla, IVAM, Meadows Museum in Dallas, Museum Folkwang, Essen (2000); Instituto Cervantes de París, Museum de Arte de Zapopan, Mexico; MASP Sao Paulo. A major retrospective exhibition of Gordillo’s artwork, curated by the artist Luis Gordillo himself, Iceberg Tropical has taken place in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid (2007) and the Kunst Museum Bonn (2008). Gordillo’s works are in numerous public and private collections including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona, Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo de Sevilla, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Artium Vitoria, Fundació

Gordillo is the recipient of The Premio Velázquez a las Artes Plásticas 2007; the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1981; the Premio de la Comunidad de Madrid a la Creación Plástica and the Premio Andalucía de Artes Plásticas in 1991; the Premio de la CEOE a las Artes Plásticas in 1992; la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes in 1996; the Premio Tomás Francisco Prieto de la Casa de la Moneda in 1999; the Premi Ciutat de Barcelona d’Arts Plastiques in 2000; the Premio Aragón-Goya de Pintura in 2003 or the Medalla de Oro del Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid in 2004. He has also been honored in 2008 with the Orden de Caballero de las Artes y las Letras de Francia by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.
