Monnaie de Paris is organizing the first Paris retrospective of the major and unclassifiable German artist, Thomas Schütte. A student of Gerhard Richter at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf until the 1980s, Schütte is now recognized as one of the leading reinventors of sculpture. He is influenced not only by minimal and conceptual art but also by classical sculpture and its major codes of representation. Schütte has been the subject of several major European monographs and retrospectives, including those at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2016), the Fondation Beyeler, Basel (2013), and the Serpentine Gallery, London (2012). He was awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2005. His works are included in collections of major museums and are regularly exhibited.
