In her first solo exhibition in Germany, we are showing video and photographic works of the young German-Brazilian artist Janaina Tschäpe. During the last years, Tschäpe has created an artistic world which is linked to central art historical issues, where the reflection upon identity and the portrayal of the self remain in the foreground.
Through a kind of transformation acrobatics, that are partly reminiscent of the work of Cindy Sherman and Matthew Barney, the body of Tschäpe becomes the scenario for the expression of personal mythologies. Often one can also recognise the trace of literary phantasies, references to Kafka’s metamorfosis, a romantic longing that is reminiscent of Novalis or Goethe, or the resonance of Greek mythology.
