Tomasz Kowalski

Tomasz Kowalski is at the forefront of a movement of young Polish artists embracing a form of “new surrealism,” which can be understood as a reaction against rationalized political discourses towards the elements of the uncanny that lurks in the crevices of reality. In Kowalski’s paintings and drawings, the quotidian morphs into the tragi-comic, lending his imagery an enigmatic and psychedelic quality.

Tomasz Kowalski (b. 1984, Szczebrzeszyn) lives and works in Warsaw. He is recipient of the 2014 Drawing Prize of the Daniel & Florence Guerlain Contemporary Art Foundation. His work has been shown at venues such as Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw; La Kunsthalle - Centre d'art Contemporain, Mulhouse; Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; mumok, Vienna; De Appel, Amsterdam; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and S.M.A.K.- Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent.
