Maria Taniguchi

Lives and works in Manila

Maria Taniguchi’s paintings and videos draw attention to acts of composing, constructing, and framing. Her ongoing series Untitled, which the artist paints brick by brick, emphasize the physical accumulation of individual time while eschewing the immediate cultural references often ascribed to artists from Asia.

Maria Taniguchi lives and works in Manila. She is the winner of the 2015 Hugo Boss Asian Art Award. Her mid career survey body of work, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD), Manila, Philippines (2025) travels to Singapore Art Museum in April 2026. Taniguchi will exhibit at the Art Sonje Center in July next year. Selected recent projects include Kohta, Helsinki, Finland; Biennale Arte 2024 60th International Art Exhibition; Gwangju Biennale and the Biennale of Sydney, Australia, Musée national d’art moderne – Centre Pompidou, Paris; 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane; New Sensorium, ZKM Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologien, Karlsruhe; HIWAR: Conversations in Amman, Amman; and Don’t You Know Who I Am?
