Infraleve, the first anthological exhibition dedicated to Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz at MAMBO in over thirty years. Considered one of the most influential figures in conceptual and multimedia art in Latin America, Muñoz presents in this exhibition a key selection of both recent and past works, articulated around the concept of the “infrathin,” developed by Marcel Duchamp.
The infrathin—according to Duchamp—refers to almost imperceptible transitions, such as the warmth left on a chair after someone gets up, or the mist on a mirror: subtle changes that reveal the invisible. This philosophical and aesthetic notion has been central to Muñoz’s work, who since the 1980s has explored, with a unique sensitivity, the boundaries between presence and absence, memory and disappearance, time and matter.
The exhibition brings together nearly 30 works spanning the artist’s last thirty years of production, including iconic pieces and new works created especially for this occasion.
New works. Doomscroll, Lo demás es historia and Beltrán (2025) open new paths within Muñoz’s visual language, exploring image saturation, digital archives, and temporality in the era of hyperconnectivity.
Reconfigured iconic works. Hombre de arena (2006–2009), Archivo porcontacto (2007), and El coleccionista (2016) are presented with new spatial adaptations, reinforcing the dialogue between urban memory, the archive, and the body as a space of transit.
The Narcisos series and the ephemeral gesture. Initiated in 1995, Narcisos secos and Narcisos en proceso are key works in his exploration using charcoal dust on water—a technique that evokes the fragility and transitory nature of the image. These pieces directly engage with the mythical figure of Narcissus and the fleeting nature of identity.
Time as material. In works like Aliento (1995), the image emerges from the viewer’s breath on a steel plate, revealing the figure only for an instant, as a metaphor for life itself. In this infrathin gesture, the artwork becomes an act of momentary presence and inevitable disappearance.
Infraleve is not only a journey through the work of one of the most important artists in Colombia and Latin America, but also a profound reflection on the thresholds of the visible, memory, and the image. MAMBO pays tribute to Oscar Muñoz’s career with an exhibition that challenges our perception of time, art, and reality.
