Alexandra Grant’s solo exhibition Ein Stern genügt, um an das Licht zu glauben, opens at Neues Museum Nürnberg, on Thursday, 16 July, from 7 pm.

Ein Stern genügt, um an das Licht zu glauben/One star is enough to believe in the light is Alexandra Grant’s first solo museum show in Germany. Grant created a new body of work for the Neues Museum Nürnberg (NMN) which highlights the role women have played – and continue to play – in the history of German writing and literature.

For the exhibition, Grant presents eight large-scale works on paper, each based on a text by a historical or contemporary female writer: Christina Ebner (Nuremberg, 1277–1356), Maria Catharina Stockfleth (Nuremberg, 1633–1692), Gisela Elsner (Nuremberg, 1937–1992), Hélène Cixous (Oran, Algeria, 1937), Fatma Aydemir (Karlsruhe, 1986), Rasha Khayat (Dortmund, 1978), Pauline Füg (Leipzig, 1983; based in Nuremberg), and Olivia Wenzel (Weimar, 1985).

Through these works, Grant explores themes including how women have constituted themselves as subjects through writing throughout history, often in conflict with cultural and societal expectations; immigration to, emigration from, and movement across Germany; spiritual experience and expertise; depression and hope; war; poverty and access to resources; humanism; and discrimination.
