Sequoia Scavullo creates figurative paintings in various formats that exist on the edge of abstraction. Elements of fantastic creatures, body parts, and flying insects blur through a superimposition of layers, representing textures such as water, hair, or transparent fabric. She also experiments with video and sculpture, applying similar formal processes and blurring the boundaries between these mediums.
Central to her work is a reflection on non-verbal communication. She developed her own symbolic alphabet, elements of which appear in most of her paintings. In this way, Scavullo generates a new language while reminding us that painting, as an artistic medium, can convey emotions more complex than words alone can express.
