Jessica Rankin

Jessica Rankin creates expansive maps of landscapes dotted with codes, signs, and symbols that refer to the processes of memory, intuition, and interpretation. Mountain ranges, constellations, thermodynamic readings, lines of stream-of-consciousness text, and neurological signals morph, merge, and stretch across her embroideries and works on paper. The night sky holds a special relevance in Rankin’s practice and her works often reference the celestial constellations of specific days. In Skyfold 28 November 1941, she uses a delicate cross-hatching technique to create marks that recall swirling nebula. In The Great Other, Rankin places small scraps of paper bearing typed words or short phrases within a composition derived from a celestial map of the sky on a date of great personal significance for the artist. By focusing on a discreet, private moment and connecting it to the universality of the night sky, she places the personal within a broader macro-relationship to time and space. In Janus Suite, a collaborative series of drawings with the artist Julie Mehretu, Rankin creates a series of celestial and textual ruptures among Mehretu’s fluid, dynamic mark-making.

Jessica Rankin (b.1971, Sydney) lives and works in New York. She recently had a two person exhibition with Julie Mehretu entitled Earthfold at Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium. Selected solo exhibitions include SCAD, Atlanta; PS1 Contemporary Arts Center, New York; and Franklin Artworks, Minneapolis.
